“WE…are Venom.” – Venom Movie

We took our eleven year old and his friend to see Venom this weekend. I was a little worried it would be too scary for the boys, and I think they were a little nervous too.

Some friends of mine had told me it wasn’t too scary for their seven year old, so I felt confident they could make it through the movie.

If you haven’t heard much about Venom, here is the synopsis from the Web:

Journalist Eddie Brock is trying to take down Carlton Drake, the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation. While investigating one of Drake’s experiments, Eddie’s body merges with the alien Venom — leaving him with superhuman strength and power. Twisted, dark and fueled by rage, Venom tries to control the new and dangerous abilities that Eddie finds so intoxicating.

I really wasn’t expecting that much from this film, so I was surprised when it was good! It is a typical Marvel movie with science labs, and corrupt scientist trying to change the course of the universe. There are aliens and people turning into creatures – all of the Marvel Comic Feels.

The plot wasn’t too dark, just science/research based like Spider Man.

Venom is vicious looking, but he has a personality inside of Eddie Brock’s head, which gives him human emotions. Venom and Eddie Brock banter back and forth and so it helps Venom to not be so scary.

I was most surprised by the bad language in this PG13 film. The sh*t word is used repeatedly. But when I heard the f*uck and the Kitty-cat P word, I was really shocked! Of course the kids laughed about it, and it was kind of funny. People die in the movie, and some people get their heads eaten off, but there is nothing over-the-top graphic.

I noticed a bunch of the kids in theater running around a lot. Alex went to the bathroom twice. I asked the boys what they thought about the movie and they said they loved it. They both said there was “just a lot of intense action.” They were both sitting in their chairs with their knees to their chests and heads ready to duck most of the movie. However both had smiles on their faces!

The special effects in this movie are amazing and do not disappoint. I also really liked the sound track. Be sure to stay after the credits are over, there are 2 movie trailers to see!

Really, I think this is fine for a PG13 movie. I don’t know about taking kids younger than ten, it would depend on the kid and if they can handle high action films and some freaky death scenes.
