New Year’s Resolutions – Don’t fix what sucks. Instead, dream BIG.
Have you started thinking about your New Year’s Resolutions? I heard some great advice on this weeks Rise Podcast and I want to share it with all my friends. Rachel Hollis had on her friend Brendon Burchard, a high performance coach, and they discussed goals and New Year’s Resolutions.
Brendon said this – “I don’t set New Year’s Resolutions to fix problems.”
Meaning, don’t spend the first month of a new year thinking of all the ways your life sucks, and all the problems you need to fix – that does nothing for your self worth or self love. If you think, I need to lose weight, I need to drink more water, I need to get sober, I need to fix my diet – these are all things that YES, you need to work on, with self love and intention for your overall well being, but NOT your New Year’s Resolution.
Brendon says, “If it’s just a fix, it won’t stick.”
Instead, Brendon declares the New Year is the time to think BIG. Think about where you want to be in 3-5 years, and what skills you need to get there. Make THOSE SKILLS your New Year’s Resolution. For example, I have a dream of owning my own marketing company one day. I know pretty much NOTHING about this. My New Year’s Resolution should be to find ways to educate myself on how to run a marketing company. Another example would be – say you want to write that book but you know nothing about how to get started. Make your New Year’s resolution to learn as much as you can about how to write a book, join writer’s communities, listen to writing podcasts, go to writing events.
I LOVE this advice!
I want to be excited about a New Year and new possibilities to grow and become a better version of myself. Setting resolutions that will propel you forward in life are exciting and give you something to look forward to.
And in my experience, once I started dreaming big, the problems in my life that I needed to “fix” sort of started to work themselves out. I mean, how can I ever write a book if I am drinking too much wine. Or how can I ever think about owning my own marketing company if I don’t have the energy that comes from living a healthy lifestyle and getting plenty of rest. These problems that “suck” in your life can and will be worked out. EVERYONE has things they need to “fix.” Start dreaming BIGGER, push yourself, and you’ll be amazed at what you can do.
