“I’m standing in front of a burning house and I’m offering you fire insurance.” – The Big Short

The Big Short is a 2016 Oscar Best Picture Nominee. This is not usually the type of movie I choose to go see, but I’m trying to see some of the Oscar best picture nominees this year so I decided to give it a try. I was certain I would be bored out of my mind. I don’t understand much about Wall Street investing, mortgage loan terms, and how everything collapsed. Luckily, this movie was made for someone just like me. And honestly, I really enjoyed it!
This movie is based on true events, and follows four Wall Street investors as they attempt to bet against the housing market before it collapses in 2008. Before seeing this movie, I had no idea what a “short” even was. Several times during the movie when the terminology got too complicated and confusing, there would be a brief pause to actually explain what was going on. This would happen at the exact time I was beginning to zone out, completely confused. Special cameos included Selena Gomez, Margot Robbie, and Anthony Bourdain to explain “big terms” in a way I could understand. It was laugh out loud funny!
The Big Short pulls at your heart strings and portrays the financial corruption that occurred during this time, and how it affected millions of Americans. The movie script is written to be captivating and informative. After seeing this movie, I have such a larger understanding about what really happened in 2008, as well as the years leading up to the crisis.
The cast is outstanding. Steve Carell, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, and Ryan Gosling are perfect in this movie. I can definitely see why it is nominated for an Oscar.
If you are trying to decide what to see this weekend give this one a shot. It’s funny and very entertaining. Even if you know nothing about the mortgage loan, Wall Street, market collapse, go and see it. You will learn something new for sure.
