For Nails, Neutral Doesn’t Have to Mean Boring – Guest Post by Lynda Le
Lynda has 20 years of experience in the nail and beauty industry. In today’s post she shares some excellent neutral colors that could still pop. I really do think you’ll enjoy this article. Here’s Lynda…
You might be wondering… with the incredible rainbow of nail polish colors available today, why even bother with neutrals? Well, because they go with anything, can hide chips and minor, ahem, mistakes, AND, as explained below, don’t have to be at all boring.
Whether you have natural, gel, acrylic or shellac nails, we can help you find the perfect neutral for fall. Essie and Sally Hansen both have tons of great options that won’t bust your budget. Great colors from Essie to try include Ballet Slippers, Marshmallow, Mademoiselle, Starter Wife, Nude Beach, Sandy Beach, and East Hampton Cottage. Sally Hansen gives Essie a run for its money, however, with colors like Almost Almond, Sheer Ecstasy, Arm Candy, and Sweet Talker.

Barely There
If you’re looking for a pale, “barely there” neutral that will hide chips and flaws, a pale pink may be your best bet. Fair skin looks terrific with sea-shell pinks like Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Shell We Dance?, Chanel nail polish in Ballerina, Estée Lauder Pure Color Nail Lacquer in Ballerina Pink, Butter London Patent Shine 10X Nail Lacquer in Piece Of Cake, or Dior nail polish in Incognito. Colors that look great on all skin tones include Deborah Lippmann Nail Polish in Like Dreamers Do and JINsoon Nail Polish in Moxie.
Just Peachey
Depending on your skin tone, peach may be an even better bet than pink. Smith & Cult nail polish in Ghost Edit delivers an impressive amount of shine, but still looks natural. Other great options include OPI Nail Lacquer in Coney Island Cotton Candy, Essie nail polish in A Crewed Interest, or Tom Ford Nail Lacquer in Mink Brule. (That one almost sounds good enough to eat!)
Not Your Mother’s Beige
If the pale pink and peach, princess-y thing just isn’t you, there are so many great beige and taupe polishes available now. Try OP Infinite Shine 2 Long Wear Lacquer in Coconuts Over OPI, Dior nail polish in Sienna, or Essie nail polish in Fed Up (the name alone makes it worth trying!) or, another great Essie shade, Bare With Me.
Don’t Make Me Blush
If you have darker skin, you may want to try colors with just slightly more pigment and intensity. Some great options include Zoya Professional Lacquer in Brigitte and Michael Kors nail polish in Hint. Or try Dolce & Gabbana The Nail Lacquer in Caramel for a less rosy (but still gorgeous) option.
Shades of Grey
With Autumn’s arrival and Winter fast approaching, you may find yourself wanting something with a little more substance – there are so many sophisticated grey and silver polishes ready to help you bring in the season. Try Chanel Le Vernis Longwear Nail Polish in Horizon Line, Jin Soon Lacquer in Auspicious, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Show Steel-Er, China Glaze I Sea Ponies, or – if you really can’t get enough glitter – Yves Saint Laurent Beauty La Laque Couture in Studio Silver. If you want to get especially cozy, try Essie Nail Polish in Cashmere Bathrobe.
A Few Shades Darker
While they’re not traditionally thought of as “neutrals,” there are some luscious midnight blue shades that take the grey trend just one step further… Jinsoon nail polish in Beau mixes a stormy gray and deep midnight blue. Essie adds some shimmer with Dressed to the Nineties – a perfect shade for your fall or winter pedicure.
The Finishing Touch
Now that you’ve found the perfect color, you just need the perfect top coat to achieve a look that’s polished and professional (if you’re still having trouble picking the right gel polish brands, check this article here
Sally Hansen Miracle Gel also provides a shiny, shellac like finish that will make you look like you just walked out of the salon, but without the time and expense. Essie Gel Setter Top Coat also gets consistently good reviews.

I like to go crazy with my nails but sometimes, I definitely feel more attracted to neutral colors! Typically, when I apply neutral colors, it’s when I get french manicure done but with winter soon approaching, I’ll probably be using neutral beige colors more 😌
I’m loving neutral colors right now!
Me too 😘
