“Everywhere I go I’m the first” – The Martian

Wow! Just wow! Probably one of my new favorite movies of all time.
Going into this movie I wasn’t sure what to expect. I hadn’t read the book yet, and I had heard people compare it to Gravity and Cast Away. Which were not my kind of movies. I really wasn’t excited at all to see it. But I am so glad I did!
This movie has so many things going for it. Matt Damon, for one, is amazing. He carries the movie effortlessly with his witty humor and charm. The plot line is incredible. From the beginning to the end, you are on the edge of your seat. I usually don’t like those kind of movies, but this one wasn’t entirely all nail biting suspense.
Science! I loved the usage of the different sciences in this movie. It’s truly mind blowing how smart these scientist are and I love how they all work together. Botany, physics, chemistry, jet propulsion, astrophysics; I could go on and on. I want to take my eight year old son to see this so he can see first hand how math and science are put to practical use.
There are so many moving messages in this movie. This one is my favorite:
“At some point, everything’s gonna go south on you and you’re going to say, this is it. This is how I end. Now you can either accept that, or you can get to work. That’s all it is. You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem and you solve the next one, and then the next. And if you solve enough problems, you get to come home.” – The Martian Movie
The Martian has been in theaters three weeks already. Try and see it in the theater if you can, 3D would be even better. Definitely watch it at home as soon as it’s released on Pay-Per-View. Read the book too! Have you seen this movie yet? Let me know what you think in the comments below. Have you read the book? Should I read it after seeing the movie?
We saw the movie too and I really liked it! Of course, having also read the book, I knew how much greater and more there was to the story and I wanted them to show it all! You MUST read the book. There’s even more problem solving, science lessons and witty journal logs in the book. I thought they did a great job on the movie but I’m going to tell everyone who enjoyed the movie to READ THE BOOK!!!
Wow, if the book is better than the movie, it must be pretty good! I will definitely read it, thanks Sandy! I loved the movie!
