say yes to telling people about your business

not good at marketing

“I’m just not good at the marketing part.”

Does this sound like you?

I’ve been talking to my friends about marketing for a long time, and I wish I could say that everyone loves marketing and they find it’s super fun and easy – but that’s just not the case.

At. All.

What I mostly hear from my friends on the subject of marketing sounds like this:

I’m just not good at marketing.

I don’t feel like doing it.

I hate marketing.

I know I need it, but I’m not good at it.

I don’t know where to start so I don’t do it.

If you’ve met me, you know I’m passionate about marketing but I’m also extremely passionate about helping and encouraging women. So for months I’ve been putting together all kinds of informational marketing blog posts hoping to teach and share my knowledge of marketing to all of my entrepreneur friends out there.

But do you know what I’ve realized?

No one cares about my informational marketing blog posts, LOL! And do you know why?? Because I don’t think my friends need help with how-to-do marketing.

No, I think what they need help with most is adjusting their Marketing Mindset.

What they need help with is busting through their Marketing Mindset BLOCK.

Let me explain….

Maybe you want to write books, start an Etsy shop, become a psychologist, a hair dresser, you name it – but then after you get started with your business, you don’t want to tell anyone about it.

This lack of motivation to tell people about your business is what I call the Marketing Mindset BLOCK.

So what are the reasons for not wanting to tell people about your business? What are the reasons you say that, “you aren’t good at marketing?”

I remember when I was almost finished with my first novel, and the closer I got to finishing it meant the closer I got to publishing. The thought of publishing my novel started to make me very anxious. Publishing my novel meant I had to tell people about my book. I had to take a HUGE risk and put myself out there. Not only that, my novel was extremely personal. Telling people about it felt like exposing my soul to the world! I finally had to make a decision – I was either going to publish my novel and try to sell it, or I was going to lock it away in a drawer.

I had to bust through my Marketing Mindset Block, or I was never going to be successful as an author. Period.

I decided there was no turning back. I dug deep for courage, and I decided to create the best marketing plan to my ability. My marketing strategy was three months long and included photos, and videos, and quotes, and all kinds of graphics. It worked! Everyone I ever knew in my life heard I had written a book and they wanted to read it.

The day I released my novel I was terrified! I was paralyzed, literally, and I stayed in bed all day, under my covers, with my cats and my laptop, and waited for the world to respond to my book. And you know what? My network responded with overwhelming love and support. I had never felt so loved before in my life. My marketing plan had created such a buzz, that I reached family I didn’t even know I had! None of that would have been possible if I had kept my book a secret.

If I ask myself, what was the cause of my Marketing Mindset Block when it came to publishing my book? I know the root cause was one thing and one thing only: FEAR

Fear of putting myself out there.

Fear of being rejected.

Fear of judgement.

Fear of success.

Fear of failure.

Fear of doing it wrong.

Fear of being thought of as too salesy.

Fear of my family or friends rolling their eyes at me.

I could keep going but I think you get the point…Fear is the number one cause of the Marketing Mindset Block.

But there is good news friends! There is a way to overcome this just as I did when I decided to publish my novel and tell everyone about it!

I’ve been working on pinpointing Marketing Mindset Skills that can help you push past this Marketing Mindset Block. Skills such as self-love, courage, consistency, agility, and motivation.

I want to keep talking about this on my blog, so that together, you can push past this obstacle in your business and reach your full potential.

I honestly don’t think its lack of skill. I don’t believe your idea that, “I’m just not good at marketing,” is the real issue. If you can figure out how to post on Facebook or Instagram, you can figure out marketing.

So, what if its not fear?

What if you truly hate marketing? What if you truly, honest to God, just don’t feel like doing it?

Well, then maybe you shouldn’t have started a business.

(Did that hit a nerve?)

Good! I hope it did! Did you feel that passion about your business when I told you to stop doing it? When I wrestled with the idea of putting my novel in a drawer and locking it away, there was no way I was going to be able to live with that decision.

If the thought of not having your business isn’t an option, that means you’re passionate enough about your work that you don’t want to give it up.

If you’re passionate enough about your work that you don’t want to give it up – then you’re passionate enough to do whatever it takes to make sure it succeeds.

If I told you that all you had to do for your business to grow is one social media post a day, could you do it?

All you need to do is tell people about how passionate you are about your business – that’s marketing.

Look, I know it was very tough to start your own business. It takes someone who is strong, confident, has courage, and is willing to take risks to start their own business.

MOST people will never do it! Congrats on taking this HUGE step!

But you have to know that the ONLY WAY to STAY in business is to tell people about it.

A secret business is not going to make money, therefore, isn’t really a business at all.

If you are that strong, confident, courageous, risk taker that started this business – I promise you are strong enough to tell people about it – WITH CONFIDENCE.

The fear is never going to go away. If you’re afraid of something, that is the ONE THING YOU NEED TO RUN TOWARD.

I can remember how terrified I was to post my first blog post back in 2015. I know what that fear feels like, and I still feel it every time I put myself out there. I feel it right now as I take this risk sharing this blog post with you today.

People are afraid of what they don’t know. Once you take a risk and start telling people about your business, you are confronting your FEAR. This is the ONLY WAY to overcome it.

If you have butterflies – GOOD! That means you are growing. That means its important! The butterflies tell us we are on to something!

Every time I create a blog post I get super nervous and feel all the butterflies just before I hit publish. Every time I hit share on Facebook or post on Instagram my butterflies are in full flight!

But once I tap the buttons, and my work is in the world, I feel good! I conquered my fear and it gets easier every time I do it. I get stronger with each blog post, or with each social media post. I’m even making video now and putting my face out there more (something I never thought I could do!)

Developing a strong Marketing Mindset is something I believe everyone has the capacity to learn. If this is something you tell yourself you are not good at, then dive in and work on getting better!

You owe it to yourself, and you owe it to your business. Don’t let this be the reason it fails. Don’t let this be the reason you don’t grow.

So promise me this friend – you’ve said YES to your business, now say YES to telling people about it.

Try it once. DECLARE it with all of your soul that you are doing this, and you are going to rock it!

I know marketing can be scary and overwhelming, but I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be. If I can do this then so can you!

You got this!! I’m with you!

I can’t wait to talk more about the Marketing Mindset with you! What questions do you have? How can I help you?
