“Anyone can wear the mask.” – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
To be completely honest, my family and I weren’t expecting much from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. We had all seen the trailer multiple times, and weren’t quite sure what to think of it. I haven’t seen this new comic-book animation style before, and there have been sooooo many Spider-Man movies. Curiosity won – and when we found ourselves with an opportunity to see this movie on opening day, we took it! My eight year old daughter had a sleepover, so we took our two boys, ages 10 & 11 to see Spider-Man.
Let me just say – I am SO GLAD we saw this movie. WOW!

Bitten by a radioactive spider in the subway, Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales suddenly develops mysterious powers that transform him into the one and only Spider-Man. When he meets Peter Parker, he soon realizes that there are many others who share his special, high-flying talents. Miles must now use his newfound skills to battle the evil Kingpin, a hulking madman who can open portals to other universes and pull different versions of Spider-Man into our world.
First let me talk about the story line:
This story is completely modern and unique, and unlike any Spider-Man movie I’ve seen. The story combines the original Spider-Man story (we’ve all seen that Tobey Maquire version) and adds a completely new twist, with old and new characters. It connects ALL the Spider-Man story lines through alternate Universes. So creative! The characters are perfect! They are funny, have depth, and all have their own stories to tell.
Now, the animation:
I thought this was going to be like any other comic book movie animation that I have seen on television. I had no idea! This animation is extreme and so detailed. At one point I forgot it was animated at all. The comic book elements such as word bubbles and graphics would pop in at just the right moment, and add just the right amount of story emphasis. For example, the picture below. The squiggly lines were present when the characters sensed danger using their spider sense.
The Sound Track:
The music in this film is awesome. My boys and I have already downloaded the soundtrack and listened to it on repeat. The music fits the film and setting just right and I love how they incorporate it with the main character, Miles.
Miles is a middle school boy, which is probably why my own middle school boys related to the film. I’m glad we didn’t take my daughter, I’m not sure she would have enjoyed it as much as they did.
There is nothing inappropriate in this movie. No cussing, no crude behavior, nothing too intense or scary. The story line is sophisticated so I am not sure a younger movie goer would appreciate the film. There are some slow parts, like every other Spider-Man movie, so I would recommend taking the older kids verses the younger ones so you don’t lose their attention. There is plenty of adult humor for the adults as well, but it’s still appropriate for the kids to hear.
The messaging is great for kids – it talks about how anyone can step up and become the best version of themselves. Anyone has the opportunity to push themselves and make a difference. It doesn’t matter what you look like, or where you come from, we are all equal and are capable of great things.
I really hope they make more movies in this Marvel series. I would love to see all of them! My boys absolutely loved it and even my eleven year old, who didn’t want to see it, changed his mind and said its awesome.
