“I realize this: out of sight, but never out of mind.”

Mary Kubica has proven once again why she is one of my favorite authors. Don’t You Cry is easily one of the best written novels that I have read in a long time. Probably since I finished her other two novels, The Good Girl and Pretty Baby.
Don’t You Cry follows the mysterious disappearance of Esther Vaughn. Esther’s roommate, Quinn, tries desperately to unravel the clues and find her seemingly normal best friend. But Quinn learns that things aren’t always as they seem. Alongside Quinn’s story is another character, Alex. Alex can’t seem to shake the presence of a new girl who has showed up in his small town, beckoning him with her mysterious charm. Quinn and Alex fall deeper down the rabbit’s hole searching for answers and overcoming their own fears.
This novel will keep you guessing until the very (very) end. I love how Mary Kubica structures her novels. She gives you bits and pieces of the plot, a little at a time, building and building until you finally have read the entire book, and you say, “Ah I get it now.” When you read one of her books, it’s not just the events or characters that will have you entranced. It is her use of language. She can write the most beautiful sentences describing small details so perfectly that they jump off of the page. As I read her books, I get lost in her words and paragraphs. You have to almost put the plot aside and just read while taking full appreciation for how magnificent her use of language fills the pages.
Quinn “It’s also lonely and I’m desperate for someone, anyone, to keep my company, for the sound of voices other than those which live inside my head.”
Alex “But I’m still here, sitting on the carousel all alone, chasing down some girl that’s unreachable; she’s far out of reach as are most of my dreams.”
If you are looking for your next suspenseful mystery novel, read Don’t You Cry. Let me know what you think! If you are curious about her other two novels, you can read what I thought about them here. The Good Girl & Pretty Baby.
